Peter Downsbrough (1940-2024) has made vital contributions to PLACE. His powerful minimalist reflection on the role of visual and verbal representation of time and space, as exemplified in a large number of works traveling from sculpture to book, from film to lecture, from photography to wall and room pieces, is a landmark in contemporary art and an outstanding example of the new-found dialogue between art, society and political as well as ethical commitment. It is therefore with the utmost gratitude that this issue offers a tribute to his work and achievements. The exceptionally multifaceted and diverse production of Peter Downsbrough explains the specific form of the tribute, which highlights the wide range of media, projects and interventions of the artist, while also paying attention to the possibility of expanding it through new critical and poetic stances.
